Holdingford’s Johanna Merten in the running for Powerade Athlete of the Year Award

Holdingford High School senior Johanna Merten is in the running for the Powerade Athlete of the Year Award, presented by Viking Coca-Cola Brewing Company. The award, along with $1000, will be given to 10 student finalists who have been recognized within their school for their community and extracurricular involvement.

Voting is open now through May 7 by visiting www.vikingcocacola.com.

Merten stays busy all school year competing in cross country in the fall, basketball in the winter and track in the spring. Since seventh grade she’s accompanied the Huskers girls team whenever they’ve advanced to state with the exception of her sophomore year when she went out for swimming.

In 2016 Merten went to the state cross country meet as an individual. In basketball, she has been a four-year starter and has been named to the first team Central Minnesota Conference.  She has been a consistent leader in both scoring and rebounding season after season.

In spring 2015 she was a member of the 4x400 relay team that advanced to the state meet. In addition to racing on relay teams, she competes in the middle distance races as an individual and has been one of the top finishers.

Merten has plans to carry her athletic passion on into her college experience after graduating from HHS this spring.
